Abstract: BACKGROUND: A sedentary lifestyle is an important risk factor for chronic noncommunicable diseases. Screen time (TV, computer, vídeo-game, tablet, smartphone) is a kind of sedentary behaviour and there is evidence of this behaviour in the first years of life. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate babies screen time and its relationship with biological and socioeconomic variables. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 306 children between 1 month and 2 years of age, assisted by the pediatric clinic from the “Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira“ (IMIP). The data collection consisted on a form and a questionnaire adapted from “The Canadian and Sedentary Behavior Guidelines for The Early Years“ which evaluates the screen time and the time spent on prolonged sitting or being restrained. The statistical analysis was made by the Stata 12.1 program, which uses the chi-square test for dichotomized variables and the t-student for continuous variables. RESULTS: Our research demonstrated that 84% of the infants and toddlers were classified as sedentary by the Canadian guideline. TV at home, parents usage smartphone and mothers largest screen time were found in the sedentary group, respectively, p=0.005, p=0.0029 and 0.0028. CONCLUSION: A high number of sedentary behaviours in the early years were found, therefore, it is important to develop new cohort studies to keep track of those babies and verify if this sedentary behaviour continues through life.
