Abstract

INTRODUCTION: the presence of benign adnexal mass in women is a routine in gynecological practice, but the possibility of malignancy should be evaluated also since ovarian cancer is the eighth most malignant neoplasm diagnosed in women in Brazil. OBJECTIVE: to determine the epidemiological, clinical and histopathological features of ovarian neoplasms in patients attended at CAM-IMIP between 2008 and 2014. METHODS: a cross-sectional, observational descriptive study was performed in patients with the diagnosis of ovarian neoplasm, assisted at IMIP, Recife, Pernambuco. Data were collected from patients' records between 2008 and 2014, excluding all those who presented absence of essential information or loss of follow-up of the patient. Epidemiological, clinical and histopathological features of ovarian neoplasms were evaluated. RESULTS: The average age was 46.3 years, 55.8% were menacing, the main associated disease was systemic arterial hypertension (31.6%) and pain in the lower abdomen was the main symptom (56.1%). Most were diagnosed by ultrasonography (63.2%), with an average mass volume of 1043.8 ml. Histopathological findings revealed epithelial tumors in 64.2%, germinal (22.2%), and stromal tumors (4.7%). The majority was submitted to a surgical procedure (94.8%) and 40.7% underwent chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: It was possible to determine the epidemiological, clinical and histopathological characteristics of the patients with ovarian cancer, presenting real statistical relevance, since, through the data obtained, was possible to corroborate with the data observed in the literature
