Aleitamento materno e fatores de risco para o desmame precoce em lactentes hospitalizados em um centro de referência da cidade do Recife

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the duration of breastfeeding and associated factors in hospitalized patients in a reference center in northeastern Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in pediatric medical clinics at a reference hospital in Recife (PE), with 77 infants aged 0-12 months. Children with pathologies that prevented breast suction, who were under nutritional enteral therapy by catheter or the impossibility of anthropometric evaluation by the curves of the World Health Organization were excluded. Data collection was performed by chart observation associated with a structured interview. Statistical analyzes were done in the SPSS program, version 20.0 and analyzed based on absolute and percentage frequencies. Results: The sample consisted of infants with a mean age of 4 months and mean birth weight of 2980g. Of the interviewees, 53.2% of the infants were breastfed, only 26% of them were exclusively breastfed and 36.4% of the infants were breastfed before 4 months of age and / or never breastfed. age or whole milk. Most families resided in the interior of Pernambuco and had per capita income less than half a minimum wage. The mean maternal age was 24.9 years, with a schooling time of less than eight years. Conclusion: Early weaning may be influenced by socioeconomic factors. Health programs that analyze these variables can identify women at high risk for early weaning and provide them with more systematized attention.
