Abstract: Introduction: Technological advances have promoted advantages in medical practices. However, excessive electronic devices can cause harm to patients. In relation to electronic equipment in the operating room (OR), infusion pumps, anesthesia stations and monitors that increase anesthetic safety are highlighted. On the other hand, other electronic devices are also taken to the OR. If, on the one hand, they provide easy access to medical information, on the other, they present great potential for distraction for the professional. Therefore, it is important to understand the risks and benefits of use. Objective: To analyze the use of electronic devices in the operating room, observing the frequency and purpose of use among anesthesiologists and residents of anesthesiology of the Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira (IMIP). Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed at the IMIP surgical centers. A questionnaire was applied whose variables were characteristics of the participant; frequency and purpose of the use of electronic devices; risks to the patient and use in emergency situations. The questionnaires had open questions in order to characterize the professionals under study. To evaluate the data related to the use of electronic devices, the Likert scale was used, with a variation from 1 to 5. The collected data were compiled in a database and analyzed with the software SPSS 13.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for Windows and Excel 2010. Results: In the analysis of the data of the 40 anesthesiologists and residents of anesthesiology, the average ranking (AR) of the use of electronic devices in OS was 4.27 and the use with high frequency was similar (4,17). The device most used by these professionals is the cell phone (AR = 4.27). The use of these devices is performed for both medical (AR = 4.17) and non-medical purposes (AR = 3.85). According to the interviewees, the greatest risk of using the devices is distraction (AR = 4.1), but only 17.5% agreed or totally agreed that they had seen or are aware of any intercurrence due to their use. Of the 40 interviewees, 95% consider the use of electronic devices important in emergency situations, and most have already used them (AR = 4.02). Conclusions: Most anesthesiologists and residents participating in the research do or have already used electronic devices in the OS; it is important, therefore, to establish updated protocols to establish the appropriate frequency and purpose of its manipulation, with the aim of reducing risks.
