Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical and surgical characteristics of patients undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy by intrafascial technique. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive observational study at the Center for Women's Mother and Child Institute of Pernambuco (IMIP), from June 2014 to September 2015 (being the collection carried out from November 2014 to May 2015) involving 53 women undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy intrafascial. The most relevant variables studied were duration of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, frequency of blood transfusion, hematocrit and hemoglobin difference, pain intensity and analgesic requirements after 12 and 24 hours of surgery. In the analysis, frequency tables were used and measures of central tendency. We calculated the differences of the medians in hematological measurements, using nonparametric Mann-Whitney alpha error lower than 5%. RESULTS: Three patients (5.7%) required blood products, and the red blood cells the only one used. The mean operative time was 116min. The median blood loss volume was 737mL. Also evaluated was the difference in hemoglobin and hematocrit pre-and postoperatively as a measure of blood loss during surgery and found that this difference has been a point for hemoglobin and hematocrit to two points, however, this difference was not significant. After 12 hours of surgery, 45 (84.9%) patients reported feeling pain, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) had a median of 05. The treatment of pain with analgesic use was conducted in 100% of patients. After 24 hours of surgery, 44 (83%) patients reported pain in EVA had a median of 04. The treatment of pain with analgesics was performed in 94.2% of patients. There was no bladder injury. CONCLUSION: It was found that few patients required blood products, and the red blood cells the only one used. Unlike Hemoblobina and pre and postoperative hematocrit was not significant. There was no bladder injury. The pain postoperatively, according to Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), ranked moderate intensity. After 12 hours the treatment of pain with analgesics was performed in all patients, whereas over 90% remained after 24 hours of surgery.
