Abstract: OBJECTIVES: assess magnesium serum levels in pregnant women and the association with maternal socioeconomic , demographic and obstetric history. METHODS: Descriptive cross-sectional study , conducted in Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira ( IMIP ), Recife -PE , from November 2014 to May 2015. Serum magnesium levels were measured in pregnant women up to 20 weeks of gestational age and applied form of socioeconomic , demographic and obstetric history. Additional information was obtained from hospital records . RESULTS: 289 pregnant women were studied with a mean gestational age of 11.5 ± 4.2 weeks. Hypomagnesemia ( < 1.8 mg / dl ) was identified in 28.7% and was not associated with socioeconomic and demografic factors, however, it was more frequent in pregnant women with gestational age between 12-20 weeks ( p = 0,037 ). CONCLUSION: Although the dosage was performed at an early stage of pregnancy , has been identified prevalence of hypomagnesemia next to 30%. Prospective studies are needed to better assess magnesium serum levels during pregnancy, the impact and importance of routine measurement in prenatal care.
