Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the influence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) on the quality of life of university students in Recife. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2016 and July/2017 involving 649 students above 18 years who studied at Faculdade Pernambucana de Saúde. Sociodemographic and gynecological variables and life habits were investigated, as well as the presence of PMS among the students. To evaluate the quality of life, we applied the WHOQOL questionnaire - BREF of the World Health Organization (WHO), which has already been validated in Brazil. The project was approved by the Ethics Research Committee of the institution. Results: Among the 649 students analyzed, the percentage of PMS was 49.9%. In the PMS group 23.3% had the simple form and 26.6% had the premenstrual dysphoric disorder (SMDD). Most of the students had between 18-24 years (83.2%), lived in Recife (78.6%), and had regular menstrual cycles (72%). Nearly half of them practiced physical activity twice or more a week (56%). Comparing quality of life among students without PMS, the ones with the simple form and students with SMDD, there was a significant difference in all investigated domains and in the first question of the WHOQOL questionnaire - BREF. Considering the physical and psychic domains there was statistically significant difference between the students who did not have the syndrome and those who had any of its forms (p<0.001). In the field of social relations and the environment domains there was statistically significant difference between not having the syndrome and simple PMS (p=0.01 and p=0.009, respectively). Conclusion: It was observed that in all domains of the questionnaire both the simple form of PMS and the SMDD influenced the quality of life of students of the health area, as well as the self-evaluation of the university students about their quality of life.
