Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the association of initial nutritional status and outcome of weight gain in pregnant women. Method: Longitudinal study in pregnant women attended at the Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira – IMIP (Recife- PE), in the period from june to September 2015. The anthropometric data were collected at the first prenatal visit and the last that preceded the birth. The BMI was used as a parameter for nutritional diagnosis. The analyzes were carried out in the SPSS Program version 22.0 and tests of association of variables were performed. Results: A total of 69 pregnant women were evaluated, most of them primiparous, starting the nutritional monitoring from the second trimester. The mean age was 26 years. In the initial pre-gestational period, 52.17% of the women were overweight or obese. In the pregnancy period, the high weight gain was found in 44.93%. There was an association between pre-gestational overweight and high weight gain (p = 0.026). Conclusion: The majority of pregnant women presented inadequate gestational weight gain, evidencing the importance of lifestyle change promotion, and it is necessary nutritional monitoring from the pre-gestational period in order to avoid future complications for the mother and child binomial.
