Abstract: Background: Critically ill patients frequently experience pain during their intensive care unit stay due to their clinical condition, routine procedures and treatment. Untreated pain can result in psychological and physiological disorders, key factors to ICU morbimortality. However, this symptom continues to be poorly assessed and controlled by health professionals in the ICU, partly because of low adherence to pain assessment tools. Objectives: To describe the frequency of patients that presented pain during a clinical ICU stay and evaluate the knowledge and use of instruments to measure this symptom by professionals in this setting. Methods: A case series study was developed with 35 patients admitted to the IMIP clinical adult ICU (n = 35). Patients or their representatives were given a form containing identification data, clinical and functional evaluation instruments prior to admission to the ICU. Then, pain scales were applied to the patients: EVA and BPS. Another form was applied to professionals with questions about pain assessment practices. The analysis was performed with the Stata 12.1SE software, adopting p ≤ 0.05. Results: The frequency of patients with pain during ICU stay was 11 individuals (31.42%). All 16 health professionals know what a pain scale is, but only 2 used it, including in sedated/intubated patients. Conclusion: There was a significant frequency of pain in patients in the IMIP clinical adult ICU, which was neither being evaluated nor treated by the vast majority of professionals.
