Abstract: The study had as its objective to analyze the psychological impact of the diagnosis of HIV in adult patients, stabilishing factors with potential influency on their psychological health. Participated of the research 50 patients followed at the Hospital-Dia of the Instituto de Medicina Integral Professor Fernando Figueira (IMIP), aged between 19-59 years (M:36,76 DP: 11,12), that aswered to a sociodemographic questionary and to Beck’s inventaries of depression, anxiety, hopelessness and suicidal ideation (BDI, BAI, BHS, BSI). Data analisis revealed higher levels of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation amongst the participants when compared with general population, also was noticed a significant level of hopelessness. It has not been observed any protective factors for the psychological aspects that were subject to this study, being the time of the diagnosys an important factor in the levels of depression at the studied group. The results made evident the necessity of a better psychological care to the HIV positive patient, considering that the obtained results has been observed in patients that already are followed in a reference hospital focused on the care of HIV positive people.
