Título: Conhecimento dos pediatras e estudantes de medicina sobre o desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor e social das pessoas com síndrome de down: um estudo de corte transversal

Resumo: OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the general knowledge of pediatricians and medical students of the sixth year on the ability of people with Down Syndrome (DS) regarding the psychomotor and social development. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study, developed in Recife, with 112 students in the sixth year of medicine at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and Pernambuco and Health School (FPS) and 10 doctors from the pediatric clinic of the Integrative Medicine Institute Teacher Fernando Figueira (IMIP). Participants, after signing a term that autorize the participation in the reserch, a questionnaire developed by the researchers based on the International Classification of Functioning (ICF). The questionnaire of 23 questions with answers debt options yes, no, do not know and reduced capacity. The study collected information on interpersonal relationships, sexuality, learning, self-care, sports, arts and employability. RESULTS: Among the evaluated topics, doctors and students had agreement on most of them, concluding that individuals with Down syndrome are able to carry out their activities in various spheres. However, with regard to criticism in relationships, students felt there is a reduced capacity. Doctors, on the other hand, said the reduced capacity is related to the completion of higher education, care of their own health and marital relations. CONCLUSION: Doctors and students have knowledge about the capabilities of people with DS, although differ in some literature points as marital relations and the ability to study at a university. Then further studies suggest how the time being patient diagnosed with Down's because it is known that very young with trisomy 21 have the diagnosis difficult and time are not being stimulated early. Thus, doctors can further assist not only the patients with the syndrome, but also families.
