Resumo: Objectives: Evaluate the accuracy of frozen section in multiple organs and analyze possible factors of interference. Method: It was made a retrospective study in a period of six years (between January 2011 and march 2016) in one teaching hospital from Recife city. The diagnostics of frozen sections were compared to results obtained in the paraffin method and classified as concordant or discordant. The discordant cases were review by pathologist and subdivided in false positive and false negative. Possible reasons for discordance of results were indicated. Results: It was analyzed 1226 surgical fragments, of which 1181 (96,33%) were concordant and 45 (3,67%) discordant. After review of the discordant cases 39 remained, 6 (15,4%) of them were false positive and 33 (84,6%) were false negative. The organ that showed most false positive results was mammary sentinel lymph node (3/50%), whereas ovarian showed most false negative outcomes with 17 specimens which represent 51,51% of all false negative cases. The possible causes for discordance were sample size, method limitations and complexity of the diagnosis. Conclusion: Frozen sections is a method that has a high accuracy and could help in the intraoperative therapeutic planning of the patients with cancer. The accuracy of 96,3% found in this study is similar to specialized literature.
